5 Ways to Instantly Become More Confident Speaking Online
You might not believe this but I don’t see myself as a very confident speaker, I now nut’s right considering what I do. Let me explain a little more….. I hate speaking at live in the room events so much so that the last time I did I had a serious panic attack. From that moment, I swore I would never do it again. At the time, it was a nightmare that I felt I would never recover from.
In some respect, it became a blessing in disguise as I soon discovered that I didn’t need to speak at live in the room events. I could, in fact, use the skills I had learnt from Toastmasters and the Professional Speaking Association to deliver talks online to reach a much bigger audience…. and I could convert a higher percentage of attendees into becoming customers…perfect, right?
You could say if I hadn’t had the panic attack then I would most likely still be speaking at live gigs. I’ve taken to speaking online like a duke to water. Over the last eight years, I worked with hundreds of budding speakers from around the world and appreciate that a lot of these people haven’t initially felt comfortable speaking online which leads to then being unconfident.
A lot of the new and professional speakers I have worked with want to work with me because I’m able to provide a platform for them to build their confidence in a safe environment.
You see speaking online creates a very different energy as you don’t have a live audience to interact with. You are by yourself talking to a device maybe your phone or a webcam which is very much a cold experience. This type of setting doesn’t allow you to hold an audience so you can’t read what is going in the external environment.
The reality is when your speaking online you are going to be competing with a lot of distractions that are totally out of your control. Unless you are delivering focused actionable learning that people need to pay attention to.
Your ego pretty much gets left at the door when your speaking online as your talks become more focused, shorter and sharper on your message to keep people engaged.
The number 1 trick to becoming more confident is purely to show-up, I now obvious right. But if you’re not feeling the love and are uncomfortable then you’re going to be less likely to show-up. Remember the first time you gave a talk at a live event. I bet you felt nervous and unsure as to how you would be received its only natural right? Confidence is created by doing and positive reinforcement so you must show-up to gain confidence speaking online.
Yep, this is what it says on the tin rather than sitting relaxed at your desk. Change your energy and stand-up and deliver the messages. Spend a couple of minutes just grounding yourself. Stand with your feet just slightly apart and imagine energy flowing from the floor into your feet then into your whole body.
Speaking Online doesn’t need to be complicated these days. You can do it from your phone, desktop or even your tablet. You also don’t need to overthink it or spend hours planning what you are going to be talking about. Online speaking is great because people love to be able to contact with the real person behind the brand. This gives you an awesome opportunity to deliver off the cuff speaking.
Going raw is about being in the moment sharing your excitement, insight and learning, raw thoughts without interference.
Keep it Short
One of the great things about speaking online is that you are in the driving seat. You can make your talk as long or as short as you like. The downside to this is that it can make time feel slightly unmanageable. In the online world people’s attention span, it latterly seconds. So, you must be much more direct faster no hanging around to find out what the message is. To build confidence start with presenting between two to five minutes.
Play it Back
It’s never as bad as you think it is, a lot of the negative stuff you are thinking is really in your head. So, you must give yourself the opportunity to listen back to what you have said. This will help you put those demons to rest and start to figure out what you like and can then do more of.
I had the pleasure of training with Rikki Arundel, for the Virtual Speaking Professionals, LIVE weekly focused actionable learning speaker training. Rikki delivered training on The PEPP Talk approach to outstanding speaking. Rikki spoke about the need for a clear, single message when speaking online.
